#7 Dry Skin

Dry skin is a nuisance, but you don’t have to suffer. A few tips to keep dry skin at bay is to skip long hot showers, as this dries out the skin. Try to limit yourself to 5-10 minutes. Use a gentle cleanser that has no soap or mild soap. It’s important to pat your skin with a towel after it is wet, that way you leave your skin a little wet. Apply a moisturizer within 3-5 minutes to lock in moisture, according to medicinenet.com.

These oils are helpful for hydrating dry skin: Clary Sage, Cedarwood, Lemon, Lavender, Myrrh, Gentle Baby, Geranium, Frankincense, Jasmine, Myrrh, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Rose, Roman Chamomile, Sacred Frankincense, Sandalwood, and Palmarosa.

Dry Skin Serum

2 Tb facial oil

10 drops each of Lavender and Rosemary

5 drops each of Hyssop and Myrrh

Add facial oils to an amber bottle, then add each essential oil, place cap on tightly and gently roll bottle in the palms of your hands. Use each morning and night, focusing on dry areas.


#8 Oily Skin

A dermatologist will tell you that the most effective way to manage oily skin is to wash your face in the morning and at night. “Always use a gentle cleanser since harsh soaps can trigger the skin to increase oil production,” says April Armstrong, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, Davis.

Linoleic acid has been proven, when applied topically, to reduce clogged pores by over 25% in just a few weeks when used daily.

Oils that contain the highest amounts of linoleic acid are


Oils to help improve oily skin are: Bergamot, Clary Sage, Cedarwood, Cypress, Frankincense, German Chamomile, Lemon, Lavender, Lemongrass, Geranium, Helichyrsum, Juniper, Melrose, Orange, Sandalwood, Tea Tree, Patchouli, Peppermint, and Rosemary.

Oily Skin Serum

#9 Normal Skin

This is the ideal skin everyone strives for! Once you get it, here is how to keep it! Oils for maintenance are: Frankincense, Geranium, German Chamomile, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Neroli, Palmarosa, Sandalwood, and Rose.

Normal Skin Serum

2 Tb Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil

10 drops of each Geranium and Palmarosa

5 drops of each German Chamomile and Lavender

Add jojoba oil to an amber bottle, then add each essential oil, place cap on tightly and gently roll bottle in the palms of your hands. Use each morning and night.


#10 Combination Skin

Many people have combination skin, and there are a few oils that can help. As I am sure you have noticed many of these oils pull double duties such as: Bergamot, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Lavender, Geranium, Myrrh, Orange, Sandalwood, Sacred Frankincense, and Patchouli.

Combo Skin Serum

2 Tb Facial Oil

10 drops of each Lavender and Orange

5 drops of each Bergamot and Geranium

Add facial oils to an amber bottle, then add each essential oil, place cap on tightly and gently roll bottle in the palms of your hands. Use each morning and night.


#11 Mature Skin

Mature skin needs special care, and these oils take exceptional care of mature skin: Clary Sage, Cypress, Elemi, Frankincense, Lavender, Lemon, Gentle Baby, Geranium, Helichyrsum, Myrrh, Neroli, Orange, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Rosemary, and Rose.

Quick History Lesson: Myrrh and Frankincense come from the resin of their respective trees. You may know these were two of the gifts given to the baby Jesus, ever thought about why? Many people were taught this was because Myrrh and Frankincense were precious and expensive. I recently heard an interesting theory, they were given to help preserve his body. Long before Jesus was born, both Frankincense and Myrrh were historically used as an embalming methods. So, why is this important to us now? Both of these essential oils can help “preserve” your skin, to help keep it looking young, fresh, and radiant!

Special Note: Don’t feel like you can dish out the money for Rose? That’s ok because Gentle Baby has Rose in it!

Skin Firming Recipe (Morning)
3 drops Tangerine
3 drops Cypress
Mix with any high grade vegetable

Skin Firming Recipe (Night)
5 drops Patchouli
5 drops Cypress
5 drops Geranium
1 drop Sandalwood

#12 Sensitive Skin

Young Living actually has an entire line of gentle and chemical free beauty products! I had a hard time finding a face wash that either didn’t leave my skin overly dry or not cleansed enough. I just started using Orange Blossom Facial Wash two months ago. I put 1 Tbs. of Orange Blossom in a foaming pump dispenser and filled the rest with distilled water. I still have ¼ of it left, even after using it twice a day! You can even add a few drops of your favorite skin care essential oils into the bottle for an extra boost.

#13 Carrier Oils

The next two posts are very long post, but there are many carrier oils to choose from that will best suit your particular skin needs.

A carrier oil is a vegetable oil like coconut, olive oil, jojoba or grapeseed oil, that can be used to dilute essential oils, and helps to keep essential oils from evaporating too quickly. They are important for several reasons such as, to disperse essential oils to a larger area, protect skin from sensitizing oils, like oregano, a hot ois. A carrier oil does not dilute the effect of essential oils.  “When oxidized, carrier oils breakdown and form free radicals, which, left unchecked damage cells, accelerate the aging process and have a detrimental effect on skin,” according to Dr. Scott A. Johnson in his book Surviving When Modern Medicine Fails.

All oils should be organic and unrefined. Shop for carrier oils that have been cold pressed or cold expeller pressed. This indicates that the oil has been pressed from the fatty portions of the botanical without the use of added heat. The process can still generate heat due to the friction of the method, but cold expeller pressed oils are processed under conditions that keep the heat to a minimum. Oils that simply say expeller pressed have not been processed to maintain low heat levels. When oils are processed without cool conditions, the high temperature degree and duration of the processing method can harm the fragile nutrients in the oil. When using essential oils with a carrier oil, the essential oils drive the carrier oil into your skin. You do not want chemicals entering your blood stream. Remember to keep all of your carrier oils in a cool, dark place to prolong their shelf life. Sniff your oils before you use them and if any smell “off,” it’s probably gone rancid and it’s best to replace the oil.

Carrier oils have a shelf life of approximately 6 months, unlike Young Living’s essential oils. Keep your carrier oils in a cool dark place, as they are susceptible to oxidation and rancidity. You can keep them in your refrigerator, with the exception of avocado oil, which extends their shelf life to 9 months. Before use return them to room temperature.

General Safety Information: Use caution when trying any new ingredient, including carrier oils on the skin or in the hair. Those with nut allergies should consult their medical practitioner before coming into contact with nut oils, butters or other nut products. Also, if you haven’t used a particular carrier oil before, have all who will be using the final product do a small skin test to make sure they don’t have any reactions.


  • Coconut oil is a good choice for many things, such as the discomfort cream. It serves as a protective layer, making it the perfect base for any homemade ointment or skincare product, especially diaper rash creamand lip balm. Coconut oil is also absorbed quickly by the skin and moisturizes well. It is solid at room temperature, so if that’s not what you want your finished product to be, use it with another carrier oil. Otherwise, use coconut oil as a base. It can be drying to some people, so it is not a good choice as a face cream.


  • Vitamin E Oil helps repair damage done to the skin and keeps skin healthy. Vitamin E oil contains valuable antioxidants that help to keep the immune system up and improves circulation to all parts of the body, including the scalp. When added to homemade products, Vitamin E extends their shelf life. This oil rejuvenates and offers protection for the scalp and skin.


  • Shea Butter is full of vitamins including vitamin A, which is known to help blemishes, fine lines, burns, scars, and stretch marks. It is also nourishing, healing for the skin and soothing. It is a very hydrating for skin, but not to be used on the face. The scent is easily overpowered, meaning that you can add any essential oil you like to lotions containing Shea butter and the lotion will pick up the scent of the essential oil perfectly.


  • Aloe Vera Gel has been identified to be an excellent carrier oil. It penetrates deep into the skin layers quickly. This makes it a wonderful carrier oil for massage therapy, because of its powerful skin penetration property. “It is cooling, hydrating, rejuvenating, tonifying, and healing to the skin.” (S. Johnson) Aloe Vera oil can carry other products into the skin quite fast, like essential oils. It is good for all skin types, especially prematurely aged, sensitive, inflamed and dry skin. It is a brilliant moisturizer for the skin. It reduces tenderness, protects the skin from free radical damage, speeds wound recovery, reduces skin irritation, and provides minor sun protection. “It contains all eight essential amino acids; vitamins A and C; and the minerals magnesium, zinc, copper, and selenium.” (S. Johnson)


  • Jojoba Oil is good for all skin types, oily, acne-prone, combination, sensitive, dry or aged skin, and it is non allergenic. Deeply moisturizing. Rich in Vitamin E and fatty Acids:  Erucic, Gadoleic, Oleic. Reduces appearance of pores over time, superficial fine lines and stretch marks. Very similar to skin’s natural oils and mimics collagen. It balances the skins pH and sebaceous glands and natural oil (sebum) production. Technically a wax, not an oil. Low viscosity, thin, light texture, easily absorbed, non-greasy, non-tacky. Does not clog pores. Storage: Stores well, stable shelf life. Not prone to rancidity. Used to extend shelf life of other oils.
  • Apricot Kernel is good for all skin types, including sensitive and aging skin. A wonderful oil similar to Sweet Almond, but more suitable for sensitive and prematurely aged skin. It can be used liberally in most body care recipes. High in Vitamin A, and fatty Acids: Oleic, Palmitic, Linoleic, Linolenic, Stearic. Low viscosity, light texture, quick absorption. Suitable to use on small children. I like this oil for anyone who has large pores, as it does not clog them. Good shelf life, up to one year. Stores well, avoid light and excessive heat.
  • Avocado Oil is for sensitive, irritated skin, severely dry skin, fine lines, and aged skin. “Rich in monosaturated fats, lecithin, vitamins A, B, D, E, sterol, lutein, beta-carotene, and essential fatty acids.” (S. Johnson) High viscosity, thick texture. Highly recommended to those with sensitive skin, problem skin, and other irritations that require vitamin rich oil. The darker the oil the better, a light green oil means it is highly processed. Good shelf life, up to 1 year. If you’re allergic to latex, you may also have problems with avocado oil.
  • Evening Primrose Oil is one of the most expensive carrier oils. It is also very unstable and susceptible to oxidation if exposed to heat or air. It’s an abundant source of GLA, making it helpful with dry and scaly skin. It is also recommended for mature skin.
  • Sweet Almond Oil is for normal and dry skin. Sweet Almond Oil is expressed from the seed of the sweet almond rather than the bitter almond, has a faint aroma, and is very close to the natural oils found in the skin. It was first used by the Romans in skincare preparations Current uses are for chapped, irritated skin, and to soften fine lines. This is one of the most useful, practical, and commonly used oils. It is great for all skin types, as an acting emollient and is best known for its ability to soften, soothe, and re-condition the skin.  Shelf life is 12 months.
  • Grapeseed Oil is good for oily, non-cystic acne-prone skin, and sensitive skin. It is a non-allergenic, gentle yet smoothing moisturizer, and an astringent oil. Low viscosity, thin, very light texture, easily absorbed. Fatty Acids: Linoleic, Linolenic, Oleic, Palmitic, Stearic. Excellent for blending with thicker oils to lower their viscosity, lighten texture and help increase absorption. “Grapeseed oil contains the potent antioxidant flavonoid oligomeric procyanidin (OPC), which helps protect against cellular and tissue damage.” (S. Johnson) It has vitamin E which promotes healthy circulation, cell regeneration, the healing of wounds, and supports a healthy glow. Grapeseed is especially useful for skin types that do not absorb oils too well, and it does not leave a greasy feeling. Good shelf life, up to 2 years. Stores well, avoid light and excessive heat.
  • Olive Oil is good for dry, scaly, chapped, and mature skin. It contains essential fatty acids of Oleic, Palmitic, Linoleic, Linolenic, Stearic, vitamins A and E, minerals, antioxidant compound hydroxytyrosol, and proteins. Hydroxytyrosol is said to “prevent free radical damage to cells.” (S. Johnson) Extra Virgin is most beneficial. Medium viscosity, thick, heavy texture, may leave oily or tacky residue. Excellent shelf life, stable, up to 2 years. Stores well, avoid excessive light.
  • Rose Hip Oil is good for dry, weathered, dehydrated, mature, and damaged skin. Extremely high in essential fatty acids; Oleic, Palmitic, Linoleic, Linolenic. Contains Trans-Retinoic Acid, similar to the active ingredient of Retin-A. Contains Vitamin A and E. Ability to regenerate skin cells, reduces scars, stretch marks, fine lines, UV damage, sun spots, premature aging. Considered a “dry oil”, low viscosity, light texture, easily absorbed, non-greasy. Penetrates skin layers to hydrate and lock in moisture. Can be used straight from the bottle as a moisturizer. In the winter months of New England, I mix this with Safflower Oil to keep my skin hydrated. Good shelf life, up to 1 year, if refrigerated after opening. Should be kept refrigerated. Avoid light, heat, temperature changes.
  • Borage Seed Oil is a prized oil in skin care for its noteworthy essential fatty acid content, consisting primarily of the omega-6 EFA gamma linolenic acid. It has also been used with positive results for many different skin issues, such as dry, cracked, scaly, peeling, crusty, red or irritated skin, acne, and prematurely matured skin.  Furthermore, studies have begun to show that it may be able to be beneficial for treating and preventing a malady of conditions. Borage Seed Oil is expensive and is usually blended in a small (often 10%) dilution with other carrier oils. By their nature, essential fatty acids deteriorate quickly, therefore, goes rancid rather quickly.
  • Camellia Seed Oil (Tea Oil) Camellia Seed Oil, also known as Tea Oil, is cold pressed from the seeds of Camellia sinensis or Camellia oleifera, the same trees that render the leaves used for green, white and black tea. It offers good skin penetration. The seed oil is said to be rich in anti-oxidants including Vitamin E, essential fatty acids and non-essential fatty acids including oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid. Caffeine is a water soluble compound. Although tea leaves contain caffeine, Camellia Seed Oil probably does not. I, however, have not been able to verify this. Shelf life is 1-2 years.
  • Do not confuse this oil with Tea Tree Essential Oil. Tea Tree Essential Oil is a volatile essential oil with a strong aroma whereas Camellia Seed Oil is a vegetable (fatty) oil from an entirely different plant species.
  •  Hemp Seed Oil does not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) or the other psychoactive constituents that are present in the dried leaves of Cannabis sativa. Hempseed oil has the perfect fatty acid profile, possesses many therapeutic properties and reduces irritation. Exceptionally rich oil, high in essential omega fatty acids and proteins. This oil has a pleasant nutty smell, deep green color, and absorbs well into the skin. It makes a marvelous cosmetic grade oil and because of its high nutritional value, it makes a superior quality dietary oil and one that can be used as a base ingredient for skin care recipes which require healing and regenerative ingredients. Unrefined hemp oil does not have a very long shelf life. The oil quickly goes rancid, unless it is stored in dark containers in a refrigerated environment.
  • Castor Oil natural source oil from castor beans. A hard and shiny oil found in most cosmetics that acts as a barrier agent and protective medium against harsh conditions and extremes. Very soothing to the skin when included into cosmetic applications. It is often used topically to help reduce discomfort, soothe irritated skin, and suitable for oily skin. Use with other carrier oils.
  • Safflower oil suits all skin types and is rich in nutrients like vitamin E and fatty acids. Safflower oil nourishes and conditions the skin and is used to treat dry, aged and damaged skin for it is easily absorbed. I particularly like this oil because on a hot day I do not look like I dipped my face in olive oil! I am predisposed to oily and clogged skin and this one does not contribute to those issues.
